Thank You

Colleagues & Industry Friends,

After a long year of industry roundtables, steering committees, subject matter forums, and growing community support, the Vancouver Maritime Centre for Climate officially launched on April 30th, 2021. We had just over 100 guests, all of which joined us in celebration with gift boxes delivered to their door containing champagne and other goodies courtesy of our sponsors, SEDNAMETIS Cybertech, and Hull Wiper.

I want to take this time to thank all of you for your ongoing support and dedication. It always impresses me to see our community come together to address the climate imperative through networking, collaboration, and knowledge sharing with and through VMCC. We could not have made it to this point without each and every one of you- thank you.

I also want to thank our wonderful guest speakers, the Honorable Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, Honorable Minister Bernadette Jordan, and CEO Kendra MacDonald of Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, each of whom spoke to the governments’ agenda for addressing climate change as well as the immediate challenges our industry is facing.

The launch also signified the official rollout of VMCC membership and our pilot project program, Operation Flagship. We have been actively fielding membership applications over the past few weeks, and I look forward to having many more familiar (and new!) faces sign up.

The months ahead will continue to open doors for all of those in our community as we work together to tackle climate change, and I am excited to have all of you with us on this journey.

Elisabeth Charmley

co-founder, VMCC

The Salish Sea Challenge

As part of Operation Flagship, VMCC is excited to announce that we are currently accepting proposals for maritime solutions that can directly address greenhouse gas emissions in the Salish Seas. Your proposal should be focused on one of five categories outlined below:

  1. End-to-End Electric Power

  2. End-to-End Low-Carbon Intensity Alternative or Renewable Fuels

  3. Port-Based Efficiencies

  4. Deep-Sea Shipping Energy Consumption

  5. Other - General Performance Improvements

This challenge is open to all categories of applicants, including innovators, industry, industrial associations, small and medium-sized enterprises, research and development (R&D) organizations, post-secondary institutions, municipalities, not-for-profit organizations, government research labs, and individuals. Applicants are not required to be based in British Columbia but proposed projects must be piloted, demonstrated, or implemented by vessels sailing within British Columbia’s Salish Sea, or their immediate supporting infrastructure.

Collaboration between multiple organizations is eligible and encouraged for this opportunity. Collaboration between partners can often represent a strong value proposition by demonstrating opportunities for technology validation, commercialization, and sharing of results, in particular for challenges that seek to enable end-to-end solutions.

Applicants are encouraged to engage and include British Columbia’s post-secondary and research institutions in a project consortium where appropriate. It is desirable for projects to attract and train highly qualified personnel who can increase British Columbia’s innovation capacity in the areas of focus for this call.
