The Vancouver Maritime Centre for Climate
The Vancouver Maritime Centre for Climate (VMCC) is an initiative specifically focused on maritime decarbonization in the province of British Columbia.
We believe that bringing the broad-based maritime industry together helps facilitate the mobilization and implementation of meaningful solutions whether it is alternative fuels, infrastructure, advanced technologies, updated policies & regulations or better data & Information. Ultimately, accelerating the transition to a cleaner economy that is both competitive and zero emissions.
To advance the mission of accelerating maritime decarbonization, VMCC focuses on a series of targeted activities designed to provide value to its members and stakeholders. These activities enhance industry collaboration, facilitate knowledge sharing, and drive actionable outcomes for maritime decarbonization efforts in British Columbia.
Supporting industry and innovation
The carbon footprint of the global shipping community is estimated to be 2.6% of the world’s annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and is steadily growing due to the ever increasing demand for maritime based trade.
With 90% of the world’s global trade done through shipping, the need to optimize ships’ energy and operational efficiencies, and realize the use of verifiably renewable fuels is the only path to limiting the effects of climate change.
Mission
To aggregate, accelerate, and amplify maritime decarbonization in BC to drive measurable emission reduction in the industry.
Vision
To help establish British Columbia as a global leader in maritime decarbonization leading the industry to net-zero by 2050
Scope
To dramatically reduce emissions from all commercial marine vessels and supporting land-based infrastructure in British Columbia.
Green Shipping Strategy
The VMCC Green Shipping Strategy outlines the necessary goals and Implementation Pathways as key indicators of success in collectively guiding the British Columbia maritime and shipping transport sector to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and Criteria Air Contaminants (CAC) emissions in line with federal and provincial legislation and commitments.
Community
Our community represents a diverse cross section of key industry stakeholders dedicated to decarbonizing the maritime sector by implementing and advancing net-zero initiatives.
Operation Flagship
Operation Flagship is a unique program designed to match incumbent industry players that have a need to the innovator and solution-provider community that is ready to help
