The Vancouver Maritime Centre for Climate

The Vancouver Maritime Centre for Climate (VMCC) is an industry led initiative dedicated to accelerating the transition to a zero emissions shipping industry in British Columbia.

We recognize that maritime operators are currently facing large regulatory hurdles, both compulsory and voluntary, to reduce emissions. We believe that bringing industry together helps facilitate the mobilization and implementation of green technologies that will help ship owners and the supporting land based infrastructure get to zero emissions faster.

The intention of the VMCC is to bring the right players to the table to help provide solutions and accelerate the implementation of technology through information sharing from previous and current experience, as well as facilitating pilot projects between our members to help them test technology and get in touch with resources they may not have previously thought to tap into.

Supporting industry and innovation

The carbon footprint of the global shipping community is estimated to be 2.6% of the world’s annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and is steadily growing due to the ever increasing demand for maritime based trade.

With 90% of the world’s global trade done through shipping, the need to optimize ships’ energy and operational efficiencies, and realize the use of verifiably renewable fuels is the only path to limiting the effects of climate change.

Mission

To create a world-class centre of excellence for addressing the climate imperative within the maritime industry.

Vision

To establish Vancouver as a global leader in the decarbonization of the maritime and shipping sectors.

Scope

To dramatically reduce emissions from all marine vessels and supporting land-based infrastructure in the greater Vancouver area and surrounding waters of British Columbia.

Green Shipping Strategy

The VMCC Green Shipping Strategy outlines necessary goals and Implementation Pathways as key indicators of success in collectively guiding the British Columbia maritime and shipping transport sector to reduce GHG and CAC emissions in line with federal and provincial legislation and commitments.

Community

Our community represent a diverse cross section of key industry stakeholders dedicated to implementing and advancing green initiatives.

Operation Flagship

Operation Flagship is at the core of the VMCC’s operation and is firmly aligned with our mission to create a climate-focused, world-class centre of excellence for the maritime industry.
